CFPB Complaint Step-by-Step

How a consumer files a CFPB complaint about a credit reporting problem, and how owners can help safely.

What is inside

  • What to gather before the consumer files
  • Filing steps at a high level, and the typical response timing
  • What owners must not do, including threats and filing in the client's name

Who it is for: Credit repair owners and dispute staff helping a client decide whether and how to escalate to the CFPB.

Questions

Who files the CFPB complaint?

The consumer files it in their own name. The owner can help organize documents and a timeline, but should not file it for the client or write it as the client's lawyer.

How long will it take?

Typically the company responds within about 15 days and finalizes its response within about 60 days. Verify the current timing on consumerfinance.gov/complaint before you quote it.

Can I tell a client to file a complaint if the dispute fails?

You can explain the option. Do not pressure the client, and do not present a complaint as a way to force a payment or a deletion.
