How to dispute an item directly with the furnisher under Section 623, step by step.

What is inside

  • Which items belong with the furnisher and which stay with the bureau
  • Finding the furnisher's dispute address without guessing
  • A sample direct dispute letter and the responses to track

Who it is for: Credit repair owners and dispute staff sending direct disputes to creditors and collectors for clients.

Questions

Who sends the direct dispute, the client or my team?

The consumer's written authorization comes first. Under 12 CFR 1022.43(b) a furnisher may decline to investigate a dispute prepared by or for a credit repair organization, so ask counsel before you prepare or send these letters. Keep the authorization in the file.

Does a direct dispute stop the bureau timeline?

No. Furnisher and bureau duties are separate, so track each dispute on its own calendar.
