Mixed File and Duplicate Account Checklist

Spot mixed files and duplicate accounts, then dispute each one with proof and no identity shortcuts.

What is inside

  • Signs that a file is mixed with another consumer's data
  • How to separate a duplicate account from a real second debt
  • A sample letter for duplicates, and when to escalate

Who it is for: Credit repair owners and dispute staff finding accounts that belong to another person or appear twice.

Questions

How do I tell a duplicate from two real debts?

Match the original account, the balance and the dates to the client's own records. Two debts with different dates, creditors or balances are not duplicates.

What if the other person is a relative?

Still do not use their information. The client disputes what appears on their own file, with their own proof, and any case where the only evidence is another person's data goes to counsel.
